My mother had a very good friend, Zelda, who made these bars – so at our home they go by “Zelda bars.” Very easy, very yummy… especially if you like cinnamon and chocolate together!
Chocolate Cinnamon Bars
|2 cups sifted flour||½ cup shortening|
|1 1/3 cup sugar||1 egg|
|1 tsp. baking powder||1 egg separated|
|4 tsp. Cinnamon||1 cup choc. Chips|
|½ c melted butter or oleo||½ cup walnuts|
Mix and sift flour, baking powder, 1 cup sugar and 3 tsp. Cinnamon. (Reserve balance of sugar and cinnamon for topping.) Blend butter, shortening and egg with wooden spoon or on low speed mixer. Combine wet and dry ingredients.
Turn into lightly greased 15 X 10 X ¾” pan. Spread evenly with spatula.
Beat egg white slightly, brush over mixture.
Combine remaining 1/3 cup sugar, 1 tsp. cinnamon, choc. chips & nuts and sprinkle over top.
Bake 350 for 25 minutes. Cool and cut into bars.
If you like a thicker bar – place same recipe in a regular 9 by 13.
